Coming to a Wedding Fair near you ......

Social 6 braces have proved to be a great success to brides-to-be who want to be able to smile with confidence on their wedding day. You only have to look at the two wedding testimonials on the social6braces website to see what I mean.

Because of this, we are planning to make an appearance at some of the local Kent wedding fairs in 2011. Keep a lookout for the dates and venues from these blogs. We will have examples of the various social 6 appliances on show, including clear aligners, the Inman aligner and the different types of fixed braces.

To quote Hayley (one of our bride Social six patients),

"Unlike my perfect dress, I can wear my new smile everyday".

Invisible braces to straighten crowded front teeth arrive at Whitstable

A new type of brace has arrived in Whitstable. In addition to Inman Aligners, Clear Aligners and fixed braces that fit on the front of the teeth, we now offer fixed braces that fit on the inside of the teeth. This does truly make the brace invisible, rather than just 'less visible'. Treatment time is just as fast as the other types of Social 6 brace, being about 8-16 weeks.

Over the past 2 years we have been steadily increasing the options for Social 6 braces at Kelvin House Dental Practice. This latest type of Social six brace is most suited to people who have mild crowding of their lower front four teeth. This is one of the most common forms of crowding that we see in the practice and so many of our patients will now be able to benefit from this new, fast treatment.

Whitstable Wedding Story with Social 6 Braces and straight teeth.

Earlier this year, we fitted a fixed Social 6 brace for the delightful Helene. Her treatment went really well and her new smile was ready in time for her Wedding Day. Here is her experience with her Social Six treatment in her own words:

"I noticed that my teeth in recent photos were beginning to cross and it made me extremely self conscious. We were planning our wedding and I didn't want my smile to look awful as I do tend to smile a lot.

I went to see Paul Downes as he had been recommend to me. He made me feel at ease and put my mind at rest that by having a social six fixed brace would quickly give me my smile back and make me feel more confident. We had a long discussion about all options available, so I chose the fixed brace. At first it was quite uncomfortable and I went back back within a few hours to have the brace trimmed. By day three it felt ok. You definitely know that it is working. I didn't worry about my smile with a brace and to be truthful not many people noticed, unless they were being polite! I did change slightly the way I ate my food and always carried a tooth brush with me and tended to eat on my back teeth.

Although I don't have a hollywood smile, I have the perfect smile for me and it makes me feel happy. I use the retainer at night and I suppose its what you get used too. Its just part of my bedtime routine. I do however like the flexibility to not wear it at night;  for those special occasions I wear it during the day instead.

Paul is a very patient and clever dentist, giving me my smile back. Thank you Paul"

Which? magazine warns of buying whitening products on the Internet

The Consumer's Association's Which? magazine September edition has reported on the problems associated with buying illegal tooth whitening products on the Internet. They found that sellers on Amazon, eBay and Google were advertising products with up to 44% carbamide peroxide - a concentration that could easily burn the lining of the mouth if it's not protected.

28% of people who bought over the Internet were DISSATISFIED
9% experienced white spots on gums and lips, indicating CHEMICAL BURNS
9% got BROWN STAINING, suggestive of acidic products damaging enamel

Always consult your dentist if you want to have your teeth whitened. When carried out by a professional, tooth whitening is a safe and effective procedure which can produce excellent results.

Social Six: the new ABC of Cosmetic Dentistry

Every decade or so, a new concept appears in dentistry that eventually has a huge impact on the way we work. Sometimes it is a completely new tool (for example, the invention of the high speed hand piece in the 1960s) and sometimes it is a new material or technique (for example, the introduction of porcelain veneers in the 1990s).

In the past 18 months a new concept has been slowly developing which combines three existing treatments to produce fantastic new smiles with minimal intervention or loss of tooth tissue. This new technique will be able to help countless people who currently lack the confidence to smile because of crooked, dark or worn front teeth.

This is the new ABC of Cosmetic Dentistry.

A Alignment - straightening just the front teeth which show

B Bleaching - whitening the teeth

C Composite bonding - reshaping worn teeth with a strong, natural-looking filling material

Over the last 5 years, many dentists have learnt the skills to provide the Bleaching and the Composite bonding. What has been missing is a simple technique which dentists can use for the rapid alignment of the front six teeth that show, called “the social six”.

Conventional upper and lower braces for adults normally take 12 to 18 months to complete; this limits treatment to only highly motivated individuals.

Things have now changed!

The last year or two has seen the development of new fixed and removable braces which can straighten mild to moderately crowded front teeth in as little as 16 to 24 weeks. At last adults have a fast, predictable and affordable way to straighten their front teeth.

Alignment, combined with Bleaching and Composite bonding, can improve a person’s smile and confidence without having to have any teeth removed or drilled to make space for porcelain veneers or crowns.

New trend in dentistry towards minimal intervention

The UK is taking the lead in 'minimal intervention' dentistry. By using simple orthodontic braces, dentists are now able to correct the position of the front six teeth (the 'social 6' area) in a quick and affordable way. This reduces the need to heavily prepare teeth in order to place porcelain veneers to disguise the crowding. Any remaining slight discrepancies in the shape or colour of the teeth can then easily be corrected with the minimally invasive techniques of composite bonding and tooth whitening.
